New Water Heater Efficiency Regulations Effective April 16, 2015

Under the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA) of 1987 the DOE has adopted an amended standard as follows: Residential water heaters must comply with the amended standards found in the Code of Federal Regulations, 10 CFR 430.32(d)PDF, by April 16, 2015. This information is also in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations. (see chart)

What this means is if you have an electric tank water heater, the maximum sized residential replacement is 55 gallons unless you upgrade to a heat pump model. Also, ALL models of tank water heaters will be much larger for the equivalent storage capacity in order to accomodate the additional insulation necessary to meet the new standard.

What are your options if your space is limited?

  1. Add a Seisco Supercharger

  2. Upgrade to a whole house tankless model

  3. Build a hybrid system using a high efficiency tank heater combined with Seisco tankless to save energy AND water.
